Water Parameters

Water parameters

Stable water saves lives.

Axolotls absorb dissolved substances through their skin and gills. A cycled aquarium, repeatable testing, and small corrections protect them better than chasing perfect numbers.

Ammonia: 0 ppmNitrite: 0 ppmTest every week

Measure what matters

Know the numbers and the trend.

Record results so a small change is visible before it becomes an emergency. These targets summarize the existing Axolotls.com care standard.

Target conditions for routine care
MeasureWorking targetWhy it matters
Temperature60-64 F (15-18 C)Supports oxygenation and reduces heat stress.
Ammonia0 ppmAny measurable amount can damage skin and gills.
Nitrite0 ppmNitrite interferes with healthy respiration.
NitrateBelow 20 ppmLower levels reduce chronic stress.
pHStable, commonly 6.8-7.6Sudden change is often more harmful than a steady value.

Before the animal arrives

Complete the nitrogen cycle.

Waste becomes toxic ammonia in an uncycled aquarium. Beneficial bacteria convert ammonia to nitrite and then to nitrate, which is controlled through maintenance and water changes.

Cycle without the axolotl

Use an appropriate ammonia source and confirm that the biological filter can process it before livestock enters the aquarium.

Test the full pathway

A tank is not ready because water looks clear. Measure ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH with a liquid test kit.

Protect the filter

Keep biological media wet and avoid replacing all filter media at once. The bacterial colony lives on surfaces.

Weekly rhythm

Make maintenance predictable.

Test weekly, remove waste, and perform partial water changes with conditioned, temperature-matched water. Test immediately after appetite, gill position, buoyancy, or activity changes.

Change part of the water

A typical routine uses measured partial changes rather than large reactive swings.

Condition tap water

Neutralize chlorine or chloramine before new water reaches the animal or biological filter.

Correct causes

If a reading is unsafe, stabilize the animal and identify the source instead of repeatedly dosing toward a number.
